A couple of crucial errors by University Heights Academy, and some timely run-manufacturing by Carlisle County High School, ultimately led to a 7-2 victory by the Comet baseball team Thursday in Bardwell. CCHS broke a 2-all affair with a four-run fifth inning to earn the victory and halt the Blazers’ four-game winning streak.

The Comets jumped ahead in the third inning on a two-run double by senior Truman Davis, only to watch UHA counter in the top of the fourth on a two-run single from junior Eston Glover, who ended up singing during all four at-bats and accounting for all but one Blazer hit in defeat.

With the game tied 2-2 in the fifth inning, Carlisle put its first two batters on base with a Heights error and issued walk. The Comets then took the lead for good on an RBI flyout, passed ball on a dropped third strike, and RBI groundout. A two-out RBI single by Justin DeWeese was the only run-scoring hit that left the infield during the strange half-inning.

Davis delivered an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth with another RBI hit, and Glover was stranded at first to end the game when DeWeese got Luke Welch to strikeout for the game’s final out. Jarren Bruer (6-1) racked up nine of Carlisle County’s 10 total strikeouts to earn the win. Bruer walked four but allowed just four hits and two runs, neither of which were earned.

Senior Luke Welch (2-4) went the distance for the Blazers. Only one of his seven allowed runs was earned. Welch scattered eight hits and fanned seven Comets in six innings of work. He’s now K’d 46 batters in 36 IP in 2021.

Glover, who went 4-for-4, raised his batting average to a team-best .409. Ty Hunt had the other UHA hit — a one-out single in the top of the first inning. The teams combined for five total errors in the contest.

Heights (9-15) will once again try for its 10th win of the season when the Blazers play a pair of games on the afternoon of May 15 — a 12:30 p.m. pairing with Warren Central and a 3:30 p.m. matchup with round-robin host Todd County Central.
