Trigg County’s bid for its first three-game winning streak of the season ended at the hands of Union County and the pitching of Beau Hopper Thursday. The junior right-hander struck out six in six innings and allowed only two earned runs in the Braves’ 9-3 win.
Making his first start in three weeks, Joe Peca kept Union County off the scoreboard in the first two innings. The senior lefty for Trigg County gave up single runs in the third and fourth innings. They were sandwiched around a Trigg run in the third courtesy of an Isaac Peca single to center.
Union County broke through against the Wildcat hurler in the fifth inning when a Riley Cullen double plated a pair of runs for a 4-1 Brave lead.
Trigg put runners at second and third in their half of the fifth inning, but Hopper got a strikeout to end the inning.
Union tacked on a pair of runs in the sixth to build the lead to 7-1. Cannon Sheffer doubled home a run, and Hopper helped his own cause with a two-run single.
Down 9-1 in the seventh, Trevor Terrell drew a bases-loaded walk and Isaac Peca hit a sacrifice fly to round out the scoring.
Trigg County had seven hits in the game. Tyler Ahart had two of those, and Joe Peca had a pair.
On the mound, the elder Peca struck out 10 in five innings and allowed three earned runs.
Union County evened its season record at 13-13.
Trigg County dropped to 7-10 and will return to the road Friday to play Livingston Central.
