Trigg County is getting ‘em on. They’re getting ‘em over. They just aren’t getting ‘em in.
The Wildcats stranded 13 runners, including eight in scoring position, and lost to Mayfield 4-2 Tuesday at the Complex.
Trailing by one run, the Wildcats left the bases loaded in both the sixth and seventh innings but tallied just one run.
Down 4-2 entering their final at-bat, Trigg loaded the bases with two outs on three Mayfield walks. Ethan Kemp entered the game and nailed down the win with a strikeout on three pitches for the Cardinals.
Trigg County jumped ahead with two runs in the first inning. Andrew Williamson led off with a double and scored on Tyler Ahart’s base knock to left. Four batters later, Stephen Audas drew a bases-loaded walk, but a chance at a big inning was foiled with two strikeouts to end the frame with the bags packed.
Mayfield scored three times in the fifth inning on a Kaden Williams RBI single and a two-run double by Ben Gloyd.
The Cardinals added an insurance run in the seventh on consecutive doubles by Kemp and Jaylen Bass.
Austin Ellis pitched into the sixth inning to get the win for Mayfield, who improved to 8-18. He struck out nine and allowed two earned runs after battling early wildness.
Joe Peca had a second straight strong outing on the mound for the Wildcats despite the loss. He allowed four hits and three earned runs in six innings while striking out 12.
Trigg County [7-12] will host Hopkinsville Thursday.
