It is not an enviable situation for any pitcher to be in, especially with the game on the line. Calloway County’s Caitlyn Powers was in the circle with her team holding a 3-2 lead over the Christian County Lady Colonels in the bottom of the 7th.
Brittan Joiner, the courtesy runner for Christian County pitcher Riley Hancock was on first base with two outs after Hancock had been walked earlier in the inning. And now Powers had to face the one batter that most Christian County Lady Colonel fans would want standing at the plate in the situation, that being Reni Shemwell.
Not only is Shemwell Christian County’s leader in home runs and RBIs, but she had also sent one over the right field fence in the bottom of the third inning that tied the game at the time at 2-2, so the tension on the field was high.
This time it would be Powers that came out on top, as she got a 2-2 fastball past Shemwell to preserve a 3-2 win for the Lady Lakers. The win was the second in the past four days for Calloway County over Christian County. Monday, the Lady Lakers took a 4-1 win on their home field.
Hits were at a premium for the two teams Thursday evening, as each team could only muster four hits over the seven innings of play.
Calloway County took the early lead in the game as the Lady Lakers scored twice in the top of the first. Calloway put together two doubles and a single to take the 2-0 lead.
Reni Shemwell’s blast tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the third inning.
The Lady Lakers would score the winning run in the top of the sixth inning. Adison Hicks led off the inning with her second double of the night. She would advance to third on a sacrifice bunt and then score on a sac fly to put Calloway County up 3-2.
Caitlyn Powers, who had entered the game in relief, then set down six of the next seven batters to seal the victory for the Lady Lakers.
Christian County’s four hits came from four different players. Reni Shemwell, Pickle Winkler, Riley Hancock, and Gracie Harned each had a hit for the Lady Colonels.
In the circle, Riley Hancock went the distance, giving up three runs on four hits, striking out six, while walking none.
The loss drops Christian County to 18-10 on the year. The Lady Colonels head off to take part in the Meade County Mighty May Matchup Friday and Saturday.
