Defensive miscues cost Kentucky in its surprising 12-3 loss to Notre Dame Saturday in the winner’s bracket of the NCAA Tournament Regional in Lexington. However, in a stay-alive 7-2 win over Northwestern later Saturday it was a spectacular catch by right fielder Tatum Spangler that helped preserve the victory for Kentucky.

The Cats were clinging to a 4-2 lead when Spangler had to make a running catch before crashing into the wall in right field. She reached above her head to get the ball and then didn’t let it get loose when she rammed the wall.

“I imagine on a 10-point scale, it was probably about a 15,” Kentucky coach Rachel Lawson said. “To hit the wall and maintain control of the ball was outstanding. Big-time players make plays in big situations.”

First baseman Mallory Peyton had a perfect vantage point to see Spangler’s heroics.

“It’s one of the best catches in the outfield I have ever seen,” Peyton said. “Running back, ball over her head, blind catch. I hope to see that on ESPN somewhere. That was a game-saving play.”

Coach Rachel Lawson called the catch “incredible” and said it could easily have been a different game if Spangler had not made the play.

Center fielder Renee Abernathy knew it was an “amazing, game-saving” catch by Spangler but it did not surprise her.

“I had confidence she would catch the ball,” Abernathy said. “I didn’t know if it would be jumping on the fence, bumping the fence, or what. But it was awesome.”

Abernathy understands defense could determine UK’s fate Sunday when it plays Notre Dame for a chance to reach the Super Regionals.

“We pride ourselves in our defense. Defense wins championships,” Abernathy said. “Our offense can be as good as it is but without good defense, you do not win games.”
