The final night of the 2021 regional tennis tournament turned out to be a good one for the Caldwell County Tigers. The Tigers not only won the boys’ doubles championship but the overall team championship as well.

In boys’ doubles play, the team of Billy Wallace and Grayden Miller, who had already secured their spot in the state tournament by reaching the semifinals, fell to the second-seeded pair from Hopkinsville of James Folz and Spencer Powell 6-3, 6-3.

The top-seeded duo of brothers Jordan and Ryan Hammett was never really tested Tuesday evening on their way to the title. The Caldwell duo defeated Seth Ranes and Ryan Warford, of Webster County, in the semifinal round 6-2, 6-4.

The Hammetts were even stronger in the championship match. The pair lost only one game in the title match against Hopkinsville’s James Folz and Spencer Powell, as they rolled to the title 6-1, 6-0. It was an impressive win for the Caldwell County entry who appeared dominant in the match from the opening point.

Both Caldwell County boys’ doubles entries will now head off to the state tennis tournament next week in Lexington.

With the title win by the Hammett brothers, and the semifinal appearance by Wallace & Miller, Caldwell County accumulated enough points to take the overall boys’ team championship. Madisonville-North Hopkins took second place.
