Kaelyn Conger was big in both the pitching circle and the plate as Lyon County won a matchup of state champions Tuesday.
Conger struck out 13 and allowed just two runs on five hits. She also homered in the Lady Lyons’ 10-2 victory over Calloway County.
The game was a rare matchup of the All A Classic state champion — Lyon County — and the 2021 Kentucky 2A Championships state champ — Calloway County.
Calista Collins had a grand slam and Conger delivered a two-run shot as part of a nine-run fifth inning that broke a 1-1 tie.
Conger also singled home the first run of the game in the home half of the first inning.
Calloway (21-9) tied things in the third when Adison Hicks homered to left.
That’s where things remained until the bottom of the fifth.
Collins opened that inning by being hit by a pitch. She came around to score on Sydney Melton’s double inside the third-base bag to push Lyon in front 2-1.
Conger followed with her homer to left to make it 4-1.
But the Lady Lyons (23-9) were far from done.
Tori Schenk drove in a run with a bases-loaded sacrifice bunt.
Hadlie Butler drew a walk to force in another run and extend the margin to 6-1.
Collins then came to the plate for the second time in the frame and hammered a home run to center with the bases loaded. That made it a 10-1 ballgame.
Calloway added its final run in the sixth on an RBI single to center by Emerson Grogan.
Conger finished 3-for-4 at the plate with three runs batted in. Katelyn Dykes went 2-for-4. Collins was 1-for-2 with the grand slam and scored three times.
Reese Settle went 2-for-3 for Calloway.
Lyon also beat the Lady Lakers 6-3 early in the season.
The Lady Lyons will play at home again on Thursday when they host Madisonville-North Hopkins.
