A team title and a girls’ doubles championship were the order of the evening Tuesday for the Hopkinsville High School tennis team. The duo of Allie Fort and Ella Lester rolled their way to the girls’ doubles championship, while the girls’ match results through both the singles tournament and the doubles tournament were such that the Lady Tigers were also able to claim the team title.
In doubles play, the Lady Tigers had two entries in the semifinals Tuesday evening. Allie Fort and Ella Lester, who were the top-seeded pairing in the tournament opened their evening by powering their way past the #3 seeds Natalie Richey and Chloe Mackey 6-2, 6-0.
The other semifinal saw Ella Brown and Grasen Givens matched up against the Henderson County duo of Cameron Chandler and Merrick Conkright, who were the #2 seeds in the tournament. Brown and Givens struggled to find their footing in the opening set, falling 6-2. The second set was a tight battle throughout, with Chandler and Conkright finally taking the set 7-6 (8-6) to move on to the final.
The top-seeds Fort and Lester looked every bit the part in the title match against Chandler and Conkright. The Hoptown duo steamrolled their way to the regional title, taking the match 6-2, 6-0.
In girls’ singles play, Sophie Maddux made it all the way to the regional final, where she ran into the buzzsaw that is Fort Campbell’s Victoria Lopez Rodriguez. Maddux began her night with a comfortable 6-2, 6-0 win over #4 seed Zoe Lawrence, of Henderson County. That win set up the title match with Rodriguez.
Maddux played solid tennis in the match but was simply over-matched by the Fort Campbell tennis ace, falling 6-1, 6-2.
The combination of the results from Monday night and Tuesday night gave Hopkinsville enough points to claim the team regional title. Henderson County finished second.
On the boys’ side, the Hopkinsville duo of James Folz and Spencer Powell made it all the way to the title match but came up just a little bit short of a regional championship.
Folz and Powell opened their night rolling past the Caldwell County duo of Grayden Miller and Billy Wallace 6-3, 6-3. That moved them into the championship match against the other duo from Caldwell County, top-seeded Jordan, and Ryan Hammett.
The Hammetts owned the match from the very beginning and rolled to a 6-1, 6-0 win.
