Mayfield used a big fifth inning to take control of a back-and-forth game as they knocked off the Trigg County Lady Wildcats Thursday evening at the Trigg County Recreation Complex. The four-run inning carried the Lady Cardinals to the 7-5 win.
The Lady Wildcats took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Rylee Hendricks scored from third on a bases-loaded wild pitch.
Mayfield took advantage of a Trigg County error to even the score at 1-1 in the top of the second. The Lady Cardinals added two more in the top of the third to take a 3-1 lead.
Trigg County returned the favor scoring a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning to even the score at 3-3. The Lady Wildcats took advantage of a Mayfield error to spark the rally.
MaKenna Hendricks connected on an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth to put Trigg County back in front 4-3.
The Lady Cardinal bats then heated up in the top of the fifth inning. Mayfield opened the inning with four straight hits, a sacrifice, a single, and a walk, as the Lady Cardinals rallied for four runs to claim a 7-4 lead.
Trigg County converted another Mayfield error into a run in the bottom of the sixth to trim the lead to 7-5. The Lady Wildcats would bring the tying run to the plate in the seventh, but could not get a key hit as the Lady Cardinals held on for the win.
MaKenna Hendricks was 2-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Kiley Stone was also 2-4, with a run scored for the Lady Wildcats. Trigg County scored their five runs on a total of five hits. The Lady Wildcats did struggle a bit in the field, being charged with three errors in the game.
Avery Wade went the distance for Trigg County in the circle, giving up seven runs, six of them earned, on eight hits, striking out one, while walking three.
Trigg County drops to 8-15 with the loss. The Lady Wildcats are set to close out the regular season Friday at Caldwell County.
