Lyon County shook off some early inning sleepy and exploded for 13 runs in the fourth inning to beat Trigg County 15-2 in the 5th District Softball semifinals Monday morning in Eddyville.
Trigg County, the No. 4 seed in the tournament, was considered huge underdogs coming into the contest. With four middle schoolers starting, the Lady Wildcats plated single runs in the first and third innings to grab a 2-0 lead against the top-seeded Lady Lyons.
Audrey Alexander walked and scored on a Phelan Dossett double to right field to stake Trigg to a 1-0 lead.
Trigg added a run in the third when MaKenna Hendricks singled and scored on an Emma West double. West, who was Trigg’s No. 1 pitcher for most of the season, returned to after missing two weeks with an injury. She went 2-for-3 as the designated hitter.
Kara Hyde kept Lyon County off balance for the first two innings, allowing just three hits and no runs. After Calista Collins led off the third inning with a double, Hyde was lifted in favor of Avery Wade. Kaelyn Conger launched a two-run home run to center to tie the game at 2-2.
Trigg was looking to take the lead in the fourth with runners at second and third with two outs. However, a Trigg runner was called for interference on the base paths to end the frame.
The Lyon bats woke up in the home half of the fourth as 17 batters went to the plate against Wade and Hyde. They scored 13 runs on 10 hits and three hit batters. Half of Lyon’s hits were doubles.
Collins and Davis each had three hits as part of the 15-hit Lyon attack. Sydney Melton had two doubles and four RBIs, and Conger drove in three with a pair of extra-base hits.
Lilly Perry got the win, allowing two earned runs and seven hits. She struck out three.
Dossett and West each doubled, and MaKenna Hendricks had a pair of hits.
