Hoptown Uses 6-Run Fifth Inning to Advance Past Maroons 11-3

Hopkinsville opened up a close game with six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and went on to best Madisonville-North Hopkins 11-3 in 2nd Region baseball action Saturday at University Heights Academy.

Hoptown (22-9) recorded just four base hits in the contest, but took advantage of 10 walks to advance to Sunday’s semifinal round against Lyon County.

Madisonville (11-16) scored twice in the top of the fourth to get within 3-2 before Hopkinsville put together its big inning.

Jacob Dilday pitched into the sixth inning to pick up the win on the mound for the Tigers. He allowed just one earned run o four base hits while striking out nine and walking six.

Tim Cansler and Logan Durst blanked Madisonville the rest of the way out of the Hopkinsville bullpen.

Landon Cook was 1-for-3 with a double and three runs batted in for the Tigers. Cook’s bases-clearing double was the big hit of Hopkinsville’s six-run fifth.

Hoptown was the last team to win the 2nd Region championship, beating Caldwell County in the 2019 title tilt.

The 2020 season was wiped out by COVID-19.
