DeDe Barbee has been flirting with the 60-second mark in the 400-meter run throughout her track and field career. With one final race left in her high school career Friday, the Trigg County senior just missed breaking the 60-second mark.
However, her time of 1:00.45 was good for fifth place at the Class 2A State Track and Field Meet Friday and was a personal best time.
It was one of three medals for Barbee on the day. She also ran legs on Trigg’s 800-meter relay team that finished sixth and the 1600-meter relay team that came in eighth place.
Barbee’s previous best time was a 1:00.80 run at the state meet her freshman year. She was trying to join Melissa Thompson and her aunt Antionette Mayes as the only Trigg female runners to break the 60-second mark. Thompson’s school record run of 58.60 seconds was run at the 1984 state meet.
