Five weeks ago, Sarah Keown had never thrown a shot put or discus in competition.

Five weeks later, the Hopkins County Central senior finished in the top five in both events at the Class 2A State Track Meet in Lexington.

In her previous track life, Keown was a runner. She competed on the Lady Storm cross country team and had top-10 finishes in the sprints at the region meet.  She even tried the long jump.

She thought trying the throwing events would be her ticket to her first state track and field tournament.  After first-place finishes at the region meet, she hit the throwing pads at the Class 2A Meet Friday.

Keown set a school record in the discus throw with a heave of 104 feet that was good for second place.  She finished fourth in the shot put with a toss of 33-feet. 8.5-inches — just under six inches from another school record.

Keown will continue her track and field career at Berea College.
