Indictment Accuses Former Athletic Director and Coach of Stealing from Booster Club and High School

More details are emerging in connection to theft charges filed against a former athletic director and football coach at Christian County High School. According to court records, the charges against Steve Lovelace are the result of alleged incidents that occurred over a seven-year span that ranged from between January 1, 2014, and December 31, 2020.

According to the indictment, the charge of Theft by Failure to Make Required Disposition of Property over $500 is a result of Lovelace allegedly unlawfully converting over $500 but less than $10,000 in funds or checks from the Christian County High School Football Booster Club/Quarterback Club. The indictment further states that the unlawful conversion was for his own personal use, with the “intent to benefit himself or another not entitled thereto.”  The charge is a Class D felony.

As for the charge of Theft by Failure to Make Required Disposition of Property over $10,000, the indictment alleges that Lovelace unlawfully converted more than $10,000 in cash or checks that belonged to Christian County High School. The indictment goes to charge with the conversion was for his “own personal use, with the intent to benefit himself or another not entitled to. The charge is a Class C felony.

He was arrested on the charges Monday. Lovelace will now face the charges in Christian Circuit Court.

Lovelace, who recently joined the football staff at Paducah Tilghman High School, resigned as head coach of the Christian County football team on March 16th, less than two weeks after the Christian County schools announced that he was no longer the athletic director at the school.

In a statement issued through the communications director at the Christian County Public Schools, Superintendent Chris Bentzel stated that since the matter involved someone who was no longer an employee of the school district, the Christian County Public Schools would have no further comment on the matter.
