Mississippi State won the school’s first-ever NCAA national title in a team sport Wednesday with a 9-0 shutout of Vanderbilt in the College Baseball World Series championship game.
University Heights Academy alum Drew McGowan is a national champion. The Bulldog sophomore appeared in 24 games during the 2021 season and started eight of those.
McGowan joins Tommy Porter as Hopkinsville residents who played in an NCAA Division I national title contest. Porter, a Christian County alum, was a member of Kentucky’s 1966 Rupp’s Runts squad that lost to Texas Western in the NCAA Basketball Championship.
The Mississippi State roster had one other tie to western Kentucky. Jackson Fristoe, a sophomore who played in high school at Paducah Tilghman, pitched in 26 games for the Bulldogs with a 3-3 record.
