Kentucky freshman offensive lineman Jager Burton won the Paul Hornung Award given to the state’s top high school player following the 2020 Kentucky high school season. Now he thinks his former Frederick Douglass High School teammate Dane Key, a receiver, could be the winner after the 2021 season ends.

“I think Dane will definitely be one of the top candidates. He can be as good as he wants to be,” Burton said. “Senior year kind of gets rough but Dane is one of those kids who will keep working no matter if he is a five-star player or zero star. He will work the same way.

“I think Dane should be bumped into the top 30 overall in receivers nationally. If he’s not, then something is wrong.”

A lot of colleges agree as Key, the son of former UK linebacker Donte Key, has already made visits to Kentucky, South Carolina, and Oregon. He has offers from Arkansas, Cincinnati, Louisville, Kansas, Georgia State, Maryland, Marshall, Michigan, Northwestern, Purdue, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and Vanderbilt.

Burton had a lot of college scholarship offers as well before picking Kentucky. He liked being left alone during his recruitment and won’t try to talk about UK with Key unless asked.

“I have left him alone. If he asks me a question, I will answer it always,” Burton said.

“I don’t go out of my way to talk to him (about recruiting) because I know with your friends sometimes that is your get away from recruiting time. I try to just leave him alone but of course, I hope he comes to Kentucky.”
