Staff members at the Marine Science Center will answer any and all questions you ask. (Larry Vaught Photo)
Even though the new Tybee Island Marine Science Center that opened April 1 is not 100 percent completed, it’s still a different way to spend an hour or so during a vacation trip here. The previous center was located in the downtown area near the pier while the new center is on North Beach but still have plenty to see.
First, it offers a terrific view of the beach right after you enter the center and also has several interactive stations that children are sure to enjoy.
While I was disappointed there was not a sea turtle on location yet to pet, there was plenty to see including crabs, snakes, turtles, and stingrays along with my favorite — the baby alligators that were maybe a foot long but will grow to 10 feet in five years or more.
One plus was that the staff went out of their way to answer questions. If you asked, they answered and did so with great patience. I got information on crabs, turtles, and snakes.
Eventually, there will be a children’s playground that had youngsters at the center Friday disappointed they did not get a chance to experience all that will be there.
