Roller coaster of emotions doesn’t begin to describe the past year on and off the golf course for Lyon County’s Cathryn Brown.
Cancer took her brother and best friend Cullan almost a year ago. She was able to gather her mental game and qualify for the state golf tournament, making the cut and finishing in the top 10 on the same Bowling Green Country Club course where Cullan won a state championship.
Cathryn is trying to carve out her own name in high school golf and is on her way to doing just that. The upcoming junior won an American Junior Golf Association qualifier earlier this summer in Ashland. Last week, she finished third in an AJGA event in South Dakota.
That was just the start of a whirlwind week that also saw her hit the honorary first shot at the PGA Tour’s Barbasol Championship in Nicholasville. It was the same tournament two years ago where Cullan, a University of Kentucky sophomore, received a sponsor’s exemption and made the cut. It would be the last tournament he played in before his cancer diagnosis.
The support Cathryn has received on and off the course in the past year has been overwhelming and appreciated. She has made countless new friendships and whether people want to admit it or not, they find themselves rooting for Cathryn the same way they did for Cullan.
But make no mistake. Cathryn is working hard to write her own chapters in the book that will chronicle her golf and her friendships.
Watch Cathryn explain how those friendships have helped her in the interview below.
