During Governor Andy Beshear’s COVID-19 update Monday, Lt. Governor Jacqueline Coleman said her office has been in contact with the Kentucky Department of Education and the Kentucky High School Athletic Association concerning COVID-19 guidance for fall sports.
She said it’s her hope the athletic community leads in following the state’s recommendations so that student-athletes can have a fall and winter sports season.
After having to cancel the 2020 spring sports season due to COVID-19, the KHSAA, through guidance from the state and the CDC, saw each sports season compete in 2020-21 and have a culminating tournament although many had attendance restrictions. Coleman said roughly 25-percent of last year’s football and basketball games were canceled due to COVID-19.
The high school golf season begins this weekend with soccer to follow on August 9, volleyball and cross country on August 16, and football on August 20.
Here are Lt. Governor Coleman’s comments about her discussion with KHSAA Commissioner Julian Tackett on Monday.
