Destin Wade is a versatile athlete but he plans to play quarterback at UK
The more I read or hear about Destin Wade of Summit High School in Spring Hill, Tennessee, the more he reminds me of former University of Kentucky great Randall Cobb. Wade is a Kentucky commit and a highly-rated prospect as an athlete rather than just a quarterback where he plays. It was the same for Cobb in high school in Tennessee.
Wade was a Class 5A Tennessee Titans Class 5A Mr. Football finalist in 2020 when he had 37 total touchdowns (19 passing, 18 rushing). He passed for over 1,350 yards and rushed for another 1,509 yards.
He’s a four-star athlete and ranked as the No. 20 athlete in the country by 247Sports Composite.
Despite his stats and success at quarterback, most schools did not feel he was a Power Five quarterback. Kentucky is willing to give him the chance to play quarterback and that’s one reason he committed to UK along with his brother, Keaten, a highly ranked linebacker.
I still remember the first interview I did with Cobb and he quickly told me he was a quarterback and could play quarterback in the SEC — something he proved he could do before eventually moving to receiver and going to the NFL.
Wade is just as adamant about his quarterback ability and made that clear in a recent interview with Victor Prieto of the Tennessean.
“I’m most definitely going up there to play quarterback first,” Wade told Prieto. “If that doesn’t work, and they don’t have that plan for me, I’ll just talk to my family about it and talk to God about it and just see how everything would work out.”
Again, words that remind me so much of what Cobb told me years ago so that’s why you won’t find me saying Wade cannot play quarterback at UK.

I wish the coaches had started Lynn Bowden out at QB. By the time he was a sophomore he would have been great and as a jr he would have been a Heisman winner. He could have thrown the ball enough to be effective also if they had had a good QB coach at the time.
