Jaxon Greer’s goal in the final three minutes gave Hopkins County Central a 4-3 win over University Heights Academy Tuesday – their first victory over the Blazers in 21 career meetings.
Greer’s game-winner came four minutes after UHA’s Ethan Hale knotted the game at 3-3 with a 25-yard rocket from out front.
Also of note, the game-winner came a minute after Blazer defender and team captain Mason Price exited the game with an injury.
Both teams had success moving the ball and getting good looks at the goal. UHA had a few more, outshooting the Storm 17-10. Trevor Weldon made 12 saves for Hopkins County Central – six in each half.
UHA got on the board first when Connor Dill found Preston Thomas on the right post in the 18th minute.
Gavin Lear tied the game three minutes later with a shot at the top of the box. It was the first of two goals for Lear. He gave the Storm a 2-1 lead in the 31st minute after taking a pass from out front.
Five minutes into the second half, Dill was fouled in the box and converted the penalty kick to tie the match at 2-2.
Hopkins Central provided the answer in the 58th minute when they scored off a rebound to go up 3-2 before setting up the final seven minutes that decided the match.
UHA travels to Webster County Thursday, while Hopkins County Central plays at county rival Madisonville-North Hopkins.
