There would be no tie at the Lee S. Jones Park Friday night for the Lyon County Lady Lyons. One night after seeing Christian County score late in the match to salvage a tie, the Lyon County Lady Lyons used a four-goal outburst over a twenty-minute stretch of the first half to take control of the match and then roll to a 6-1 win over Caldwell County.
The scoring outburst came after a very slow start for the Lady Lyons. The Lady Tigers took the first seven shots on goal in the match, but could not convert on those opportunities.
The Lady Lyons finally broke through at 08:30 when Rose Smith beat the goalie and drilled a shot into an empty net to give the Lady Lyons a 1-0 lead. Just over five minutes later Leah Schroeder sent a spinning shot into the net from the edge of the box to extend the lead to 2-0. And Shroeder was far from done on the night.
At the 20:40 mark of the match, it was Rose Smith again, this time driving down the left-hand side of the field and then driving a shot across the goalie into the right-hand side of the net to make it 3-0. The scoring blitz wrapped up at the 28:00 mark when Leah Shroeder headed in a pass from Alice Smith to give the Lady Lyons a 4-0 lead that they would take into the halftime break.
The Lady Lyons opened the second half much like they opened the match, with a little bit of a lull. This time, Caldwell County converted. Keegan Miller took a deflected pass in front of the net and drilled home a shot that cut the margin to 4-1. But that would be the end of the Caldwell County rally, as much like took place in the first half, the Lady Lyons recovered their stride, and then, it was “Leah” time.
At the 60:00 mark, going down the middle of the field, Shroeder took a perfect pass from Rose Smith and found the back of the net to push the lead back out to 5-1. Shroeder capped off her four-goal night by scoring on a rebound on a missed penalty kick to make the score 6-1.
Caldwell County had its chances in the match. Over the course of the night, the Lady Tigers outshot Lyon County 23-15, but only converted one of those shots into a goal.
The win improves Lyon County to 2-0-1 on the year. Caldwell County drops to 1-1. Both teams will return to action next week in the All A Classic regional tournament.
