As you watched the Christian County Colonels Saturday on the pitch at the Stadium of Champions, you got the feeling that the Colonels were getting “oh so close.” The Colonels gave themselves a chance but could just not find the way to break through as they dropped a 2-0 decision to Webster County.
Shots on goal were at a premium in the first 40 minutes of the match. The two teams combined for only six shots in the opening half, four by Christian County and two by Webster County. The Trojans converted 50-percent of their opportunities, however. Webster County broke through on their first shot of the half when Cade Howell took a pass coming down the left-hand side of the field and drilled a crossover shot into the right-hand side of the net to give the Trojans a 1-0 lead at the 10:00 mark.
The rest of the half was essentially spent in the middle portion of the field with each team looking for an opportunity to make something happen. The half ended with Webster County still clinging to the one-goal lead.
There was an extended halftime break in the match as lightning in the area led to a forty-minute delay at the break. Nothing, other than a few large raindrops developed out of the storm cloud and after the delay the second half got rolling.
While scoring did not pick up in the second half, the attacks on goal did for both sides. After only six shots in the first half, the two teams combined for 16 shots in the second half. Christian County had several great looks close to the goal, but could not find a way to sneak the ball into the net. Those missed chances would be costly for the Colonels.
The Trojans would put the match away at the 74:00 mark when Denny Rivas scored on a rebound off a direct kick to extend the lead to 2-0. The match would end minutes later with that same score.
The Colonels got some great offensive looks in the match thanks to the attacking play of Bryan Linares, Alexander Hale, and Ashton Smith.
Christian County’s defensive effort kept the Colonels in the contest with a shot to pull out the win. Especially the play of goalie Josh Settle and defender Landon Brumfield.
Christian County falls to 0-2 with the loss. The Colonels are set to get back to action Thursday when they host Russellville at the Stadium.
