No, the “big news” Kentucky fans wanted didn’t come out after Saturday’s football scrimmage. Instead, Kentucky coach Mark Stoops and offensive coordinator Liam Coen continue to make it clear that the starting quarterback race remains a three-way battle between Joey Gatewood, Beau Allen, and Will Levis.
However, there was BIG news about freshman receiver Dekel Crowdus — one of the team’s fastest players.
He was injured in practice Thursday and initially, some reports indicated he could be out a substantial amount of time. However, Stoops indicated Saturday that he might be back for the season opener September 4.
Stoops said there were no torn knee ligaments. It was “just” a ligament strain, which is painful but not a season-ending injury. He likely will be out 2-3 weeks and smart money would be on him maybe not returning until UK opens SEC play September 11 against Missouri in a must-win game for the Cats where his speed and playmaking ability could be a big factor.
Crowdus wasted no time impressing UK coaches — and teammates — with his ability to stretch the defense when practice started and that’s why knowing he will be back is BIG news for UK.
