High drama late in the girls’ 2nd Region All A Classic found Caldwell County’s Claire Knoth and Conlee Lindsey of University Heights Academy tied for the lead with three holes to play.
The two were still deadlocked going to No. 18 at Princeton Golf Club on Saturday, but Knoth had the home-course advantage.
Knoth’s second shot on the par-4 finishing hole safely found the green and set up a great look at a birdie. Meanwhile, Lindsey’s second shot went long and forced her to have to chip from a tough spot beyond the green.
It took Lindsey two more shots to get on the green, although she did get up and down for bogey.
However, once Lindsey was laying four and could do no better than bogey, the door was open for Knoth to two-putt her way to the championship.
But she only needed one, running in a 20-footer for birdie to claim medalist honors by two shots.
It was the third birdie of the day for Knoth, which helped offset two double-bogeys. She was 4-over-par on each side, finishing at 8-over 80.
It was a double on 15 that cost Knoth a two-shot lead after Lindsey made par on that hole.
Both players parred Nos. 16 and 17.
Lindsey was runner-up with an 82, but qualified for state with her teammates as University Heights claimed the team competition.
UHA’s Rheagan Lindsey was next with 88 while the Lady Blazers’ Ava Colburn shot 96.
Dawson Springs’ Maddie Huddleston was the next lowest individual not on the winning team. She qualified for the state All A Classic golf tournament with a 100 in the regional.
The start of the 2nd Region All A Classic was delayed 3 hours by rain. Play was also halted for about 45 minutes during the afternoon, although the lead groups had finished by that time.
The girls’ state All A Classic is set for Sept. 11 at the University Club at Arlington in Richmond.
