Kadyn Costello’s 4th goal of the night allowed Logan County to fend off a furious second-half rally from the Christian County Lady Colonels and go home with a 5-3 win Monday night. The Lady Colonels essentially won the game everywhere but where it counted the most, on the scoreboard.
Unofficially, the Lady Colonels outshot the Lady Cougars 30-9. Christian County also dominated possession, especially in the second half of play, but could just not get some key opportunities to result in goals. On at least three occasions in the final 20 minutes, the Lady Colonels had shots deflect off the goalposts.
Logan County took the early lead in the match, scoring on two of their first three shots on goal. Kadyn Costello launched a shot at 10:40 that deflected off the keeper’s fingertips and found the net giving the Lady Cougars a 1-0 lead. Costello scored just over 11 minutes later when she got past the goalie and managed to get her shot between the legs of a defender to move the lead out to 2-0.
Christian County got on the board at the 32:00 mark when Lilly Larkins blasted a shot into the net to cut the margin to 2-1.
However, Logan County appeared to seize all the momentum back just over four minutes later when Brianna Shelton scored to push the lead out to 3-1 going into the break.
Kadyn Costello put the Lady Colonels on the ropes early in the second half when she scored her third goal of the night to move the lead out to 4-1. It would have been a place where some teams closed up shop for the night. Not the Lady Colonels on this Monday night at the Stadium of Champions.
Sophomore Alayah Lander started the rally when she scored on the rebound of a missed shot at 51:10 to cut the lead to 4-2. Just over nine minutes later, Autumn Bell came down the left side of the field and found the net, making it 4-3 with nearly 20 minutes left to play in the match.
Over those final 20 minutes, Christian County repeatedly pushed the ball down the field and found scoring chances but could not get one to find the net. Some of those chances were inches away from tying and then giving the Lady Colonels the lead in the match.
A breakaway off one of those opportunities set up Costello for her 4th goal of the night to finally put the match away for the Lady Cougars.
The loss drops the Lady Colonels to 1-3-2 for the year. They get back to action Thursday night when they travel to Trigg County.
