Ben Russell likes what he is seeing from his short-handed Hopkinsville Lady Tiger soccer team. But he’d much rather see what they can do as a full squad.
Minus several starters again Monday due to quarantine, Hoptown dropped a 4-0 contest to Marshall County at the Pennyrile Sports and Educational Complex.
The Lady Marshals controlled possession throughout the contest played in drizzly conditions but without any weather delays.
Taylor Joachim got her first start in goal for the Lady Tigers and made seven saves off 10 Marshall County shots in the first half. The Hoptown defense was solid in trying to slow down the Marshall attack in front of Joachim.
Kelsey Crass broke the deadlock with just over two minutes left in the first half.
Mia Teague scored a pair of goals in the first 13 minutes of the second half. Anna Robertson assisted on the first Teague tally.
Robertson assisted on the final Marshall goal, feeding Zoe Maxlow in the 71st minute.
Marshall County outshot Hoptown 27-1. The Lady Tigers’ only shot of the game came in the 24th minute as Marshall’s defense converged on any Hoptown attempt to reach the goal.
Joachim made 17 saves in goal for Hoptown, who fell to 2-3. Marshall County improved to 7-2 and ran its unbeaten streak against Hopkinsville to eight straight dating back to 2012. Five of Marshall County’s last six wins in the series have been by a 4-0 score.
Hopkinsville is scheduled to play Henderson County Thursday.
