Just about the time it looked as if the University Heights Academy Blazers were going to have an easy night of it in their volleyball match against Fort Campbell, the Lady Falcons decided to make the Lady Blazers fight hard to close out the match. After rolling through the opening two sets, the Lady Blazer gritted their way to a four-set win over Fort Campbell at Blazer Gym.

The opening set saw UHA bolt out to a quick 7-2 lead over the Lady Falcons. Holding a 15-11 lead later in the set, the Lady Blazers used a six-point run to pull out to a 21-11 lead. UHA went on to win the set 25-14.

The second set was a tight battle from the beginning, with neither team able to really get control of the set. With the set tied at 17-17, the Lady Blazer scored four straight to gain themselves just enough breathing room to go on to win the set 25-21.

The third set was a bit of a different story. Fort Campbell opened the set with eight straight points to take the early 8-0 lead. That momentum was enough to keep the Lady Falcons in control throughout the set as they went on to win the set 25-15 and cut the Lady Blazer lead to two sets to one.

The fourth set was much like the second as the two teams went back and forth. With the Lady Falcons holding a 15-13 lead, UHA hit with five straight points and appeared to be about to close things out as they took an 18-15 lead. The Lady Falcons came right back to tie the set at 18-18. With the set still tied at 22-22, the Lady Blazers scored two straight to go up 24-22 and that gave them just enough space to end up closing out the set and the match with a 25-23 win.

Suzie Comperry led the way for the Lady Blazers with 10 kills and 3 service aces. Julia Thomas chipped in with seven kills and a pair of aces. Sarah Peebles ended her night with five service aces and three kills.

Marlie Fanning had 17 assists and 19 digs for the Lady Falcons in the match. Abby Roby added four kills and 15 digs. Maddie Thompson had seven kills and 17 digs.

The win, which was the Lady Blazers’ fifth in their last six matches, moves UHA to 8-4 overall and 3-0 in district play.

Fort Campbell drops to 0-2 in both district play and overall record.
