The Todd County Central Lady Rebels appear to be hitting their stride on the volleyball court. After a two-set sweep over defending 2nd Region champion Caldwell County over the weekend, the Lady Rebels picked up a three-set sweep over University Heights Thursday evening in Elkton.
Other than a bit of a lull in the middle of the second set, the Lady Rebels were running in high gear most of the night.
Todd Central opened the first set by jumping out to an 11-3 lead. That opening run was too much for the Lady Blazers to recover from in the first set as the Lady Rebels went on to take the set 25-16 and take a 1-0 lead in the match. The 1-2 combination of Lucy Chester and Lanie Bivins did a great deal of damage in the set. Chester had five kills, while Bivins had three kills and a service ace. Julia Thomas had two kills for the Lady Blazers in the set. They also got key plays from Sarah Peebles and Evelyn Cotthoff.
The Lady Rebels opened quickly again in the second set, starting off on a 5-0 run. UHA battled back and closed to within one at 7-6. Todd Central then ripped off a 9-0 spurt to extend the lead to 16-6. Autumn Sears had a strong service run, including three aces during that stretch.
Again the Lady Blazers would battle back. With Julia Thomas and Suzie Comperry leading the way, UHA would get as close as one at 24-23. However, a powerful Lucy Chester kill ended the threat as Todd Central took the 25-23 win to go up two sets to none.
The third set, like the first two, saw Todd Central open quickly. Behind the attacking play of Lucy Chester at the net, the Lady Rebels opened with an 8-3 lead. With Julia Thomas again cranking things up at the net, UHA would close to within two points at 12-10. But a 6-0 Todd Central run extended the lead to 18-10 and effectively ended the threat as the Lady Rebels went on to close out the sweep by taking the third set 25-15.
Lucy Chester had a huge night for the Lady Rebels, finishing with 17 kills. Lanie Bivins finished with eight kills and two aces. Addileigh Woffword was stellar at setting the table with 26 assists.
For the Lady Blazers, Julia Thomas finished with 7 kills, 1 block, and 1 dig. Sarah Peebles added 11 assists, 5 digs, and 2 aces. Olivia Oakley had 10 digs, 1 block assist, and 1 kill for the Lady Blazers.
The Lady Rebels are set to return to action Saturday when they travel to Caldwell County.
The Lady Blazers are set to get back to the court next Thursday at Fort Campbell.
