Host Paducah St. Mary swept top honors in the boys’ 1st Region golf tournament on Monday at the Country Club of Paducah.
On a day when course conditions were difficult, senior Rocco Zakutney fired an even-par round of 72 that was four shots better than anyone else in the field.
Windy conditions and a tough course setup, combined with ongoing construction on the front nine — the course was in the process of installing new cart paths — made it an over 5-hour grind for most golfers.
And only four golfers carded rounds in the 70s.
But that didn’t stop St. Mary from recording a team total of 314 — which was nine shots better than their nearest competitors — and qualifying its entire team for the state tournament next week at Bowling Green Country Club.
Palmer Sims and Luke Wilson tied for fifth individually after rounds of 80. Aidan Hahn carded an 82 and Cade Fleming 86 for the Vikings.
McCracken County was team runner-up after both the Mustangs and Trigg County recorded scores of 323. McCracken edged the Wildcats by one shot from each team’s No. 5 player.
Marshall County teammates Trey Wall and Camdyn McLeod each turned in rounds of 76 to tie for second.
Trigg’s Ty Butts was third with a 77.
Also qualifying for state individually were Trigg’s Hayden Reynolds (80) and McCracken’s Abe Dumes (80), Tyler Dew (80) and Cannon Ford (81).
Marshall placed fourth in the team standings with a 324.
