In a game that began almost a month ago before being suspended for lightning, the Lyon County Lyons earned a dramatic 3-2 sudden-death victory over 5th-District rivals Trigg County on Tuesday night in Eddyville.
The Wildcats carried a 2-1 edge into Tuesday night’s proceedings, with the game picking up with 6:41 left to play in the 1st half. Timmy Mendez scored twice back on August 31, with an assist from Daniel Jimenez, while Tim Stewart got the Lyons on the board with a goal in the 14th minute.
Stewart provided the goal to tie the game on Tuesday when he converted a penalty kick in the 52nd minute after a handball was called in the Trigg 18-yard box.
Neither team could find the winner in regulation and the district battle went to two five-minute overtimes. However, the Lyons would only need 30 seconds to hand the Wildcats their eighth straight defeat when Colt Bannister pounced on a loose ball in the Wildcats penalty area and beat goalkeeper Joseph Crawford to the top left corner.
Crawford was only called upon to make two saves, one in the first meeting and one on Tuesday, while Luke Gilbert stopped three shots to earn the win.
The two teams will meet on Tuesday to decide the 5th-District title when the top-seeded Wildcats host the Lyons at the Trigg County Recreation Complex.
