You have to wonder what might have transpired had the Todd County Central Rebels been able to pick up just two yards late in the first quarter. With a chance to tie the game, the Rebels were stopped on fourth at goal at the Owensboro Catholic two-yard line, and then the bottom fell out for Todd County Central as the Aces hit with a big play and then rolled on to a 36-0 district win Friday night in Elkton.
Owensboro Catholic had taken a 7-0 lead on the first possession of the game, capping off a 66-yard drive with a two-yard touchdown run from Braden Mundy.
After the two teams traded possessions, the Rebels began a drive on a short field at the Aces 19-yard line. The drive almost never got started, however. When the Aces punted the ball on their second possession, Orrin Scott attempted to field the punt on the move. Scott mishandled the ball, but his momentum sent the ball forward and he was able to regain possession inside Catholic’s 20-yard line.
The Rebels would move the ball all the way down to the Aces’ four-yard line and have a first and goal. But, Todd Central was only able to gain two yards on four plays and gave the ball back to the Aces on their own two-yard line. Then came the “moment of truth” for the game.
On the very next play, Lincoln Clancy flared out a pass to Braden Mundy, who did not stop running for 98 yards, as Owensboro Catholic, instead of being tied at 7-7, took a 14-0 lead.
That momentum swing would end up overwhelming the Rebels before the first half came to an end.
Midway through the second quarter, the Rebels would cough the ball up at their own 25 yards line, giving Owensboro Catholic a short field. The Aces would end up converting in a huge way.
Three plays later, Braden Mundy scored his third touchdown of the night, this time on a 20-yard touchdown run that put the Aces up 21-0. And, things quickly went from bad to worse for the homestanding Rebels.
On the ensuing kickoff, the Rebels fumbled the ball, with the ball then rolling into the end zone, where the Aces recovered it for a touchdown. A two-point conversion completed the 15 point blitz in 13 seconds and gave Owensboro Catholic a 29-0 lead.
Another miscue by Todd County Central would complete the flurry of points by the Aces. Owensboro Catholic would intercept a Gavyn Nolan pass and return it to the Rebels’ 9-yard line with just 44 seconds left to go in the first half. Two plays later, Lincoln Clancy connected with William Carrico for a 14-yard score to extend the lead to 36-0 with 32 seconds to go in the half.
The second half would play out quickly as the running clock came into play with the 36 point margin.
The Rebels finished the night with 215 total yards. They had 58 rushing and were 15-27 through the air for 157 yards and one interception. The Rebels had one fumble and turned the ball over after a high snap on a fumble.
The Aces finished with 65 yards rushing, 59 of that in the first half. Catholic had 207 passing yards, with 204 of that coming in the first half of play.
The Rebels fall to 2-5 overall and 0-2 in district play.
The Aces improve to 2-5 overall and 2-0 in district competition.
Todd County Central is off next week. The Rebels will hit the road in two weeks to take on Butler County.
