After finding themselves trailing 4-0 three-quarters of the way through Thursday night’s match at Mayfield, the Trigg County Wildcats began to chip away at the lead before running out of time in a 4-2 loss to the Cardinals.

Eleasar Blanco gave the Cardinals the lead in the 13th minute when his shot snuck in at the near post, before the Wildcats turned the ball into their own net on a Mayfield corner kick for a 2-0 score.

The Wildcats began to find their footing toward the end of the first half and that continued after the break, but it was Mayfield that once again found the back of the net on a left-footed effort by Raul Sanchez from outside the 18-yard box.

Emiliano Garcia stretched the Mayfield advantage to 4-0 when his header looped in off a corner kick, but the Wildcats weren’t quite done.

After Marlee Reeves drew a foul in the Cardinals’ penalty area, Keller Nichols converted the pk to get the Wildcats on the board with 18 minutes to play.

Inside of the final five minutes, Reeves scored off an assist from Peyton Moore and had another good chance to cut the margin to a goal, but the Mayfield defense did enough to see out the win.

The Cardinals complete their regular season schedule at 9-10 with a 2nd-District semifinal vs. Graves County coming up on Monday.

The Wildcats play host to Todd County Central on Saturday before facing off with Lyon County in Tuesday’s 5th-District title game.
