It took the Trigg County girls’ soccer team some time to get going in Monday’s 5th-District semifinal matchup with Crittenden County, before three long-range goals to close the 1st half sent the Lady Wildcats on their way to a 5-1 victory.
Trigg advances to the district title game for the fifth straight year and will chase its second consecutive title in Tuesday’s matchup with hosts Lyon County.
The Lady Rockets enjoyed most of the possession over the first 15 minutes on Monday, but couldn’t generate any shots on target. The Lady Wildcats began to take control as the half wore on, with Lania Hite nearly giving them the lead when her shot hit the post in the 24th minute.
With eleven minutes to play until the break, Hite took a pass from Alyssa Southwood and beat Crittenden goalkeeper Hannah Long from 25 yards out to break the deadlock.
Trigg used a pair of highlight-reel strikes to put the game out of reach in the final minutes of the half, beginning when Olivia Noffsinger bent her corner kick into the far side netting to double the advantage.
Seconds later, Camryn Boone let loose with a blast from just inside midfield that bounced in over the keeper for a 3-0 lead.
Hite added her second goal of the game in the first minute of the 2nd half before the Lady Rockets finally got on the board with a Taylor Guess penalty kick with just under 15 minutes to play.
Trigg’s Maddie Morrow rounded out the scoring when she took the ball off a Crittenden defender and raced in to finish just inside the near post in the 72nd minute.
Trigg County had 10 shots on target, with Sarah Sink making two saves to earn the win.
The Lady Wildcats win their fifth in a row to improve to 10-5-1. Crittenden ends the season with a 6-10-1 record.
After dropping both previous meetings with Lyon County this season by a combined 7-1 score, the Lady Wildcats will hope to duplicate last year’s feat of topping the Lady Lyons in the district finale after losing both regular-season matches.
