On a night where field conditions were far from desirable, the Hopkinsville Lady Tigers still managed to find more than enough offense to advance to Thursday night’s 8th District soccer championship game. Abby Moss finished with a hat trick as the Lady Tigers dominated their match with Fort Campbell, leading wire-to-wire for a 7-0 win.

About an hour before the originally scheduled start time of the match, a thunderstorm cell parked above the Stadium of Champions and saturated the area with monsoon-like rains. By the time the match started 45-minutes late at 6:15, there was a “river” in front of the dugouts on the sideline, and water standing in numerous locations on the field.

Balls that were played low would skid across the field, while any ball that had loft would hit the waterlogged turf and quickly come to a stop.

What did not come to a stop in the sloppy conditions was the Hoptown attack, led by Abby Moss. The Tigers would end up outshooting Fort Campbell 49-5 for the match.

Moss would score three goals in a 12-minute span over the end of the first half and the beginning of the second. Grasen Givens, Taryn Underwood, and Morgan Woosley added goals for the Lady Tigers. The other goal came on an own goal by Fort Campbell at the 60:00 mark.

Fort Campbell’s season ends with a mark of 1-8-1.

Hopkinsville improves to 8-7-1 and now moves to Thursday night’s district championship match, where they will face University Heights.

The athletic directors, refs & everyone in between should have never allowed this game to be played. Win or lose those field conditions were dangerous & playing right after a downpour is asinine. The photos alone show the lack of common sense used by the adults to provide a safe environment for these girls to play the game. We are lucky on both sides that no one was severely injured. Hopkinsville deserved the W but the adults and their decision making deserve a L.
