Cathryn Brown has put herself in a good spot to capture the state golf title after a 1-over-par first round at the Leachman Buick GMC/KHSAA Girls’ State Tournament in Bowling Green.
The Lyon County junior strung together four birdies and five bogeys in staying out of trouble. She finished with a 1-under par 35 on the back nine.
Last year, Brown played in a group with Region 2 winner Macey Brown of Apollo. On Tuesday, she played with Macie Brown of Bullitt East, who bogeyed the final two holes but shares the first round lead with Madison Central’s Claira Beth Ramsey.
Cathryn Brown, Macey Brown, and Thomas Nelson’s Madison Borders are all one shot back.
For Cathryn, she’ll try and write her storybook ending in Wednesday’s final round as she tries to win a state championship on the same Bowling Green Country Club course that her late brother Cullan did — also in his junior season in 2016.
