Todd County Central will have a guard-oriented look in 2018-19, but that’s not necessarily by design. Lady Rebel Coach Travis Lovan knew he had several guards returning in his stable. However, he was hit by the late summer news that post player Mikayla Artis had transferred to the Clarksville Academy.
Artis averaged six points and seven rebounds as a freshman and was expected to be a main cog in the Lady Rebel offense as a sophomore.
With no true post player to replace Artis, Lovan said he will look to several younger players develop as the season progresses. Juniors Emoni Fort and Emma Harris will get some early looks on the inside.
Lovan does have experienced guards returning in seniors Amy Brumfield (10.9 ppg.) and Jasmine Mimms (4.3 ppg.). Brumfield was the team’s top 3-pointer shooter a year ago, while Mimms spent most of her time running the point.
Senior Paige Rager (3.3 ppg.) junior Jordan Weathers also showed the ability to knock down the 3-point shot, while Eliza Simons and Kinley Reding also saw considerable time last year and will provide further backcourt depth.
Freshman Tamiya Foster could see her playing time increase as the season goes on after an impressive summer, Lovan said.
The Lady Rebels were 14-15 last year and finished as district runner-up before bowing out of the Fourth Region Tournament with a loss to South Warren. Todd County will look to challenge Franklin-Simpson and Logan County for the 13th District title. However, they combined to graduate just one senior. Russellville returns their top three scorers, which means the Lady Rebels will need frontcourt development in order to make a run for the district title.
Todd County Central opens their season Monday at McLean County.
