In a game that wasn’t as close as the final score would seem to indicate, the Christian County girls’ basketball team used a big first-quarter run to beat visiting Owensboro 68-53 Tuesday night in Colonel Gym.  The Lady Colonels improve to 3-2, while the Lady Devils suffer their first loss of the season at 6-1.

With the game tied at 4-4, Christian County went on an 18-2 tear over the last 5 minutes of the opening quarter.  Trinity McGee and Aaliyah Hampton fueled the run with 7 points each, with Hampton beating the buzzer with a layup for a 22-6 lead after the first 8 minutes.

The Lady Colonels took a 20-point lead a minute into the second quarter, and led by as many as 23, before taking a 35-15 advantage into the halftime break.

Christian County stretched the margin to 26 with 4:15 to play in the third, and led 57-32 going into the final quarter.

The lead was 30 after a Hampton 3-pointer made the score 64-34, and from there the Lady Colonels took their foot off the gas.  Over the last 6 minutes of the game, Owensboro went on a 19-4 run for the final 15-point margin.

Hampton’s 25 points led all scorers, followed by 18 for McGee.  McGee also had 6 rebounds, with Talitha Bryant pulling down 7 to lead the Lady Colonels.

Amaya Curry finished with 20 for the Lady Devils, including 11 in the fourth quarter.

The Lady Colonels will be back on the floor at Colonel Gym on Friday when they host the Calloway County Lady Lakers (3-1).
