The Hopkinsville Sportsplex has been open less than a month, and it is already having a positive effect on high school sports.

The 54,000 square foot facility located adjacent to the James Bruce Convention Center offers multiple basketball and volleyball courts that can also be transformed into an area suitable for archery, wrestling, and youth soccer practice.

The 185-foot long turf field allows for indoor soccer to be played. Netting dropped from the ceiling allows for batting cages for baseball and softball and driving ranges for golf.

Chris Jung, marketing director for the sportsplex, says high school sports teams from each of the Christian County schools have already used the facility in some manner.

While archery and wrestling have been mentioned as possibilities for high school events, Jung says the 2019 smackdown volleyball tournament, which used to rotate between Hopkinsville and Christian County, will be held at the sportsplex.

The Volleyball Academy of the Pennyrile Region (VAPR) is using the sportsplex as a hub for their practices and scrimmages. VAPR, which is a traveling program for youth volleyball players, plans to utilize the facility in both the winter and summer.

Jung says the potential is there for the sportsplex to host large-scale events over the summer such as high school volleyball tournaments and basketball shootouts.
