The KHSAA has released a Ratings Performance Index (RPI) for volleyball for the first time, even though it will not factor into postseason seeding like it will for football this season.
The RPI formula takes into account win-loss records plus opponents’ win-loss records, and opponents’ opponents’ win-loss records. Teams get one point for a win, 0.5 points for a tie and zero points for a loss
The RPI numbers on the KHSAA scoreboard site came with the following disclaimer – “RPI is updated hourly. Teams missing scores at that time are not included. This experimental, not official, currently under development, subject to revision and must be regarded with skepticism this early in the season.”
University Heights Academy has the highest RPI in the Second Region, backing up the preseason coaches’ poll that put the Lady Blazers No. 1. Caldwell County and Henderson County round out the top three with Madisonville fourth and Christian County fifth.
In the Fourth Region, Todd County Central has an RPI of .440, which ranks them 12th out of 17 schools. However, one win could move them into the top 10 based on the formula.
While football (Cantrell, MaxPreps) and soccer (Maher) in Kentucky have had computer rankings for their sports in recent years, the KHSAA RPI is the first known computer rankings for volleyball.
