Christian County School Board Moves Forward With Resuming Fall Sports (w/VIDEO)

A big step was taken Thursday evening towards resuming high school sports in the Christian County School District. In a special called virtual session, the Christian County Board of Education gave its approval to beginning the process to ramping fall sports up for students in the district.

The board’s action comes in wake of the recent decision by the Kentucky High School Athletic Association to begin moving towards getting high school sports back up and running across the Commonwealth.

The KHSAA previously voted to allow coaches to begin meeting with their players, under social distancing guidelines, as of June 1. Lower impact sports would be able to start practicing June 15, while high impact sports would be able to start conditioning on that date.

In Christian County, the plan to get athletics running again includes:

June 8 & 9 – Signups for meetings with coaches
June 10 – Start of meetings between players and coaches. Meetings will run through June 15.
June 15 – Conditioning begins for high impact sports, while low impact sports (cross country & golf), can begin practicing.

Since gymnasiums have not been opened in the state, volleyball will only be able to workout outdoors as things get started again. Weight rooms, under stringent cleaning guidelines, will be available for use beginning June 15.

Another difference between the Christian County guidelines and the KHSAA guidelines are the number of athletes to be allowed in each group or “pod” at the beginning of workouts. While the KHSAA allows up to 10 athletes in each grouping, Christian County will be going with 8 athletes and two coaches in each of the “pods.”  Players will not be allowed to switch groups during the workouts.

The Christian County startup on those dates will be for fall sports only, which includes football, volleyball, cross country, golf, boys soccer, and girls soccer, for the first couple of weeks. Under the plan, other sports would be able to begin the process in Christian County in July.

Superintendent Chris Bentzel noted that all activities will be optional at this time for student-athletes in the Christian County School District.

The measure to allow for the re-starting of athletics passed on a unanimous vote.
