While a limited number of swim programs in the state have begun their 2021 swimming season, the KHSAA is still looking for a venue to host the state meet that is tentatively slated for April.
Commissioner Julian Tackett told the board of control Thursday there are some options for the state swim meet both at college and private locations.
Assistant Commissioner Butch Cope said there has been some dialogue with facilities but since none of them are high school pools, the COVID-19 guidelines for attendance come directly from the state.
In recent years, each of the 12 events at the state meet has had 40 qualifiers. If the state returns to its previous total of 24 per event, that could allow more fans to attend the state meet. Tackett cutting the field may be the best option for 2021.
Tackett said one option that wouldn’t cut the state meet field would be to adopt the current track and field model to eliminate qualifying heats and make each event a one race final.
Hopkinsville and Christian County began their swim seasons Tuesday against Allen County-Scottsville at the Rick Cohn Aquatic Center. The meet had very limited attendance and was video streamed.
