Hits were tough to come by for Trigg County in a 4-0 loss at Calloway County Thursday. The game served as a Class 2A Regional contest between the schools.
Laker junior Matthew Ray didn’t allow a hit in four innings of work. He struck out nine and walked just two in picking up the win on the mound.
After scoring its first run on a Trigg error in the first inning, Calloway added a pair of runs in the second inning on an infield single by Ray and a Braden Pingel single to left. Pingel had three of Calloway’s seven hits in the game.
Cadwell Turner plated a run in the fourth inning on a single to right.
Trigg’s best chance to score came in the fifth inning when Aaron DeSpain was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a balk. Hunter Reynolds reached on a two-out infield single, but a ground out ended the inning.
The Wildcats had another chance to scratch out a run in the seventh inning when Bryce Cunningham and Trevor Terrell led off with walks. Turner, one of the best pitchers in the First Region, came on in relief for the Lakers and induced a ground out, and got two strikeouts to end the game.
The Wildcats were bothered by four errors in the contest.
Joe Peca was the tough-luck loser on the mound for the Wildcats. He scattered seven hits and struck out six. Peca also had one of Trigg’s two hits at the plate.
Trigg County returns to action Friday when they host Madisonville at the Complex.
