Sydney Melton smacked her team-best fifth home run of the season and Calista Collins delivered a key RBI double to lead the Lyon County softball squad to a 6-3 road victory over Calloway County in Murray.
Melton’s bomb, which was one of two long balls for the Lady Lyons in the contest, tied the game at 3-all in the third inning. Three innings later, Collins broke that same tie with a line drive to left field that plated Lauren Davis and held up as the game-winning hit.
Collins later scored on a sacrifice fly from Melton to give LCHS a 5-3 lead, followed by a sixth-inning insurance run in the form of Hadlie Butler’s second HR of the 2021 campaign.
Ranked No. 25 in the state, Lyon County pounded out 10 hits and snapped the Lady Lakers’ four-game winning streak. It was the Lyons’ first road game of the season after starting the year 2-2 in Eddyville.
Kaelyn Conger (3-0) earned her third victory in long relief, tossing 5 1/3 shutout innings and striking out eight. Conger walked none and scattered three hits during her masterful appearance.
Collins, Melton and Butler combined to go 4-for-10 with four runs, five RBIs and 12 total bases. Lauren Davis also had a strong night, finishing 2-for-4 with two runs out of the leadoff spot.
Calloway County’s Izzy Housden (2-2) went the distance in the circle but surrendered 10 hits, six runs and two walks. She did fan eight Lady Lyons, but the three extra-base hits loomed large in defeat.
Offensively, the Lady Lakers got a pair of RBIs from Emerson Grogan, a double and a run by Adison Hicks and two hits from Carson McReynolds. Host Calloway fell behind 2-0 after RBI hits from Butler and Gracen Wynn in the opening frame, but answered on Grogran’s two run-single in the bottom half of the first.
The Lady Lakers took their lone lead with a two-out, bases-loaded walk by senior Kylie Stallings in the second inning, prior to the aforementioned game-tying homer from Melton in the third.
Lyon County (3-2) stays on the road April 8 at regional foe Henderson County, before returning home to host Crittenden County on April 12 in the opening round of the All “A” 2nd Region Tournament.
