Scoring double-digit runs and hitting multiple home runs in a game is starting to get “old hat” for the Christian County Lady Colonels. Christian County blasted three home runs and plated 14 runs Thursday evening as they rolled past Webster County 15-5 in five innings.
The 14 runs marked the third game in a row and seventh so far this season that the Lady Colonels have scored at least ten runs.
Tenley Gilbert, Reni Shemwell, and Aalaisha McGregor all left the park for Christian County.
The Lady Trojans broke through first, scoring a run in the top half of the first inning on an RBI single from Jade Jerome.
That lead would be short-lived, however. Reni Shemwell hit a two-run single in the bottom half of the inning to put Christian County up 2-1. The Lady Colonels erupted for six runs in the bottom of the second inning. Aalaisha McGregor hit a two-run blast to left to highlight the inning.
Mallory Leath drove in two runs with a single for Webster County in the top of the third to trim the margin to 8-3.
Riley Hancock got one of those runs back in the bottom of the inning, driving in a run with a ground out to make it 9-3. The Lady Colonels tacked on five more runs in the bottom of the 4th to pull out to 14-3. The big hit in the inning was a “big” grand slam from Tenley Gilbert that cleared the gazebo in center field.
The Lady Trojans took advantage of a Christian County error and a walk to force the game into the bottom of the fifth as Webster County scored two in the top of the 5th to make it 14-5.
However, it only delayed the inevitable for a moment. Reni Shemwell blasted a leadoff home run to send the home fans home happy with a 15-5 mercy-rule win.
Shemwell had a huge game for the Lady Colonels, going 3-3 with a home run, a triple, four RBIs, and three runs scored. Tenley Gilbert finished 1-2 with a grand slam, four RBIs, and three runs scored. Pickle Winkler, Gracie Harned, and Chloe Craft added two hits each for Christian County.
Riley Hancock started in the circle and picked up the win for the Lady Colonels. She went four innings, giving up three runs, two of them earned, striking out three while walking only one.
Christian County improves to 10-3 with the win, which was their third straight. They are off to Bowling Green for the weekend to take part in the Greenwood Border Battle.
