Both of Hopkinsville’s girls’ doubles teams have advanced to the semifinals of the region tennis tourney and have qualified for the state tournament next month in Lexington.
Allie Fort and Ella Lester opened play Monday on the region tourney’s first day as the No. 1 seed and didn’t lose a game in two matches. They defeated Caldwell County’s Rachael McClung and Keegan Miller 6-0, 6-0, and Madisonville’s Rylee Henson and Emma Evans 6-0, 6-0.
Fort and Lester will meet No. 3 seed Natalie Richey and Chloe Mackey in Tuesday’s semifinals.
The doubles team of Grasen Givens and Ella Brown pulled off the first upset of the tournament, beating Webster County’s Abbie Michalek and Hannah Corbin in three sets. After dropping the opening set 6-4, Givens and Brown rallied to win the second set 6-3 and won the third set tie-breaker 12-10.
They had an easier time in the quarterfinals with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Madisonville’s Abby Harris and Emily Pinkerton.
Givens and Brown will meet the tourney’s No. 2 seed Cameron Chandler and Merrick Conkright of Henderson County in Tuesday’s semifinals with a berth in the state tournament already locked up.
