After the second week of play during the 2017 volleyball season, WKU’s Jessica Lucas has been named the Conference USA Setter of the Week, the league office announced Monday afternoon. The honor marks the first of the sort during the Seymour, Ind. native’s senior campaign and the 13th of her career on The Hill. The Lady Toppers are coming off of a weekend up in Louisville where the Red and White participated in the Cardinal Classic along with Illinois, Kent State and the host Cardinals. WKU also played Tennessee State last Tuesday for the 2017 Diddle Arena opener.
Over the last four matches, Lucas registered 10.54 assists per set and 137 assists in total and now resides in fifth place on the program’s all-time assists list with 4,259. WKU Volleyball hit .324 on the week with Lucas as its facilitator. In addition to quarterbacking the offense, Lucas chipped in 19 kills against just five attack errors for a .318 hitting clip herself. The senior also chipped in 22 digs, including 10 at Louisville for her second double-double outing of the year (35A, 10D). Behind the service line, Lucas tallied a pair of aces while adding five block assists at the net.
The recognition from the conference office marks the first weekly award collected by a Lady Topper in 2017 after WKU saw 12 total accolades collected last season.
WKU is off to a 5-2 start after the first two weeks of the 2017 campaign with its two losses coming at the hands of Louisville and Illinois, a pair of Power 5 opponents. The Lady Toppers are heading for Belmont on Tuesday before hosting the Holiday Inn University Plaza Hotel Invitational this coming weekend.
