Former University Heights Academy standout Greg Buckner is back in the NBA as an assistant coach with the Memphis Grizzlies. Buckner joins the staff of interim coach J.B. Bickerstaff.
Buckner served two years under Bickerstaff in Houston from 2014-16. Before that, he was the player development coach with the Rockets for three seasons.
He played 10 seasons in the NBA with five different teams, including the Grizzlies, and was known for his defensive prowess.
Buckner was an All-State basketball player for UHA who went on to lead Clemson in scoring four straight seasons, becoming the first Tiger to ever accomplish that feat. He set the record for 122 straight starts for Clemson and was inducted into the school’s athletic hall of fame in 2005.
Bickerstaff was named the Grizzlies’ interim coach on Nov. 27 after David Fizdale was fired after a 7-12 start to the season.
