Somerset quarterback Kaiya Sheron with his family after signing his UK scholarship Wednesday
It was just over a year ago that Kentucky coach Mark Stoops watched Kaiya Sheron throw a game-winning touchdown pass at Kroger Field. That was in the Class AA state championship game victory for Somerset in what Stoops said Wednesday was “one of the best games I have seen.”
Now Sheron is one of 18 new signees for the Cats.
Kentucky recruiting coordinator Vince Marrow saw Sheron play in person for the first time in that state title game. He says he “fell in love” with the talented quarterback then.
“Kaiya is an athlete,” Marrow said. “I learned from Joe Montana in Kansas City. He was a basketball player and sometimes a point guard is what you want your quarterback to be.
“He’s everything you want in a quarterback. He’s a good decision (maker). A good arm. But the main thing is he is athletic. In this league you have got to have some athleticism … a quarterback to sometimes escape them.”
Sheron is giving up his senior basketball season to enroll at UK in January.
He threw for 3,218 yards and 28 touchdowns while rushing for 959 yards and nine more scores at Somerset.
He was an early commitment to Kentucky and never wavered in his commitment to the Cats.
