UHA Stays Unbeaten in District with Sweep of Lady Colonels

The UHA Lady Blazers will head into this weekend’s All-A Classic volleyball tournament with a bit of momentum on their side. The Lady Blazers picked up their 4th straight win with a straight-set sweep over 8th District rival Christian County Thursday night in Blazer Gym.

The Lady Blazers opened the match strong and kept their foot on the gas pedal all match long. With UHA holding a 7-5 lead in the first set, the Lady Blazers ripped off the next eight points to run the lead out to 15-5. Christian County would get no closer than six points the rest of the set as UHA took the opener 25-16.

Sophomore Susie Comperry was a huge factor in the first set. She registered five kills and a service ace in helping the Lady Blazers take the 1-0 lead in the match.

The Lady Colonels looked like they were going to make a battle of it at the opening of the second set. Christian County opened quickly, taking an early 5-1 lead. The Christian County lead was 10-4 when the Lady Blazers went on a 7-1 run to even things up at 11-11. The Lady Colonels looked to have fended off the rally as they took a 20-18 lead late in the set. However, the Lady Blazers scored the final seven points of the set to win 25-20 and go up two sets to none in the match.

In addition to setting up her teammates, Sarah Peebles added a pair of aces and had a long service run during the Lady Blazer rally to get back in the set. Camryn Armstrong had a strong set for the Lady Colonels with three kills.

The final set was a battle early on. The Lady Blazers and Lady Colonels went back-and-forth, with neither team able to take more than a three-point lead. Christian County held a 15-14 lead when UHA delivered the final knockout blow for the match. The Lady Blazers, led by strong play from Julia Thomas, Sarah Peebles, Claire Chewning, and Olivia Oakley, scored seven straight points to grab a 21-15 lead. UHA would go on to win the set 25-19 and close out the match.

Julia Thomas had a big night for the Lady Blazers, unofficially finishing with nine kills and 2 aces, six of the kills coming in the third set. Susie Comperry added six kills and an ace, with five of the kills coming in the opening set. UHA also got big nights from Evelyn Cotthoff and Sarah Peebles.

Camryn Armstrong paced the Christian County effort with six kills. Rylee Owens and Hailey Sparks were big contributors for the Lady Colonels as well.

UHA improves to 6-3 on the season. The Lady Blazers are now headed for the All-A regional tournament, which they are hosting, and a semifinal matchup with Livingston Central.

Christian County drops to 0-2 and will host Webster County on September 2.
